Characters and jewellry…such an unique and strange blend. I have always been impressed by artists that succeed to have a special and recognizable style and, why not, a special character for their creations. I haven’t managed to do such a thing and I don’t think I could create a character and have all my work marked by it. However it is an interesting and unique way to be known and it’s creating what we call a brand.
Such an example is Psyzoo, a world full of happiness and happy characters that describe the artist’s creations. This thing has also benefits and disadvantages. It’s ok if the characters that you create are liked by the public and step by step are recognized over all as your own. As a disadvantage, I suppose it is a little bit boring to follow one line in everything you create. To find out more about this matter and the psychedelic characters I talked a little bit with the Russian artist Ekaterina Zimodro, the creator of Psyzoo characters.
Bellow you can read the interview and watch some pictures with her work, that I hope you will like as much as I do.
Hello! Please tell me something about the person behind this weird character (Psyzoo)
Hello. My name is Ekaterina Zimodro, I am a designer from Saint-Petersburg, the author of Russian project Psyzoo.
My love for design began in childhood. I spent most of my free time on creativity – drawing sequels to favorite cartoons, sculpting from clay. Later, I started to customize clothes for myself. And then I met this wonderful material – polymer clay. Since then I do not let it go.
What is Psyzoo and what does it mean?
Psyzoo is a special world inhabited by my psychedelic zoo. Psyzoo means mystical accessories for those who are touched by the beauty of the world and who are deeply convinced that going beyond the usual perception of reality is the most natural reaction to such a mysterious phenomenon as life.
How did Psyzoo born? And how you got the idea to create this character?
Several years ago I first saw pretty polymer clay stuff in one of the handmade communities, and immediately fell in love with this material. Due to its plasticity, it reminded me of a living substance. And idea of beings which I can create from it appeared in my mind. That’s how Psyzoo world was born.
What is the source of inspiration in your work?
I wonder at the beautiful world around us and it is my source of inspiration. I just live and get inspired, discovering new combinations of usual things.
What do you know about handmade in Romania? Do you know something about our handmade artists?
I am sure there are lots of talented designers in Romania. I have seen nice works of your artists on the Internet.
What do you like best at polymer clay?
Since it is very convenient in working, it allows you to embody the most incredible ideas.
What are your dreams regarding handmade and what did you achieved so far?
My dream is to increase the beauty of the world by creating beautiful things with other people. I am touched by warm letters of Psyzoo admirers and it is the greatest value for me among all possible achievements.
Do you have a message for our readers?
I wish all the readers of your magazine to make as much art as possible and never rest on laurels.
