Hello everybody, today I would like to introduce you a great artist that knows how to tell beautiful stories through makeup. Her name is Tal Peleg, a visual artist from Israel. Art has been a big part of her life ever since she can remember. She used to paint and love makeup art since she was a child. She always knew that her career will involve art and aesthetics. Painting and illustration, makeup, photography. The eye-art was her way of mixing all of those passions together by using the eye as her canvas.
Gaby : Looks like when you are painting the face, you begin with a blank canvas. The fairy tales painted on your eyelid are absolutely amazing. In fact this kind of makeup makes you a lot different from others in your field. Tell us how you got to this great idea?
Tal: Makeup is an amazing form of art and I’ve tried to push the limits and challenge myself and to be able to make my eye tell a story. I don’t just paint on the eye, but try to use the shape of the eye and its natural curves as part of the illustration in a creative way. It may sound a bit cliche, but inspiration is everywhere. I look for the things that I find interesting in the world and give it my own unique artistic interpretation using makeup. I really love fairy tales so I chose to illustrate it on my eye.
Gaby: What’s your favorite part of the job?
Tal: The fact that I have a lot of artistic freedom and I can express myself with my art.
Gaby: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned and would pass along to others just getting in your field?
Tal: To step outside the box and try to be as creative and innovative as possible. Don’t try to imitate other artists, but try to find your own unique style that will make you stand out.
Gaby: What are your hobbies or non work-related activities?
Tal: I’m lucky that some of my hobbies turned into my work, like photography and painting. Other than that, I really love cinema (movies). I used to study it and I really enjoy to watch movies and read about them. I also really love to read about history.
Gaby: If a customer asks for a style that you are sure would not suit them, how do you convince the customer to go otherwise?
Tal: I no longer do makeup for personal clients, but I used to in the past, so in this case I will convince the client that if she chose to let me do her makeup she must trust me that I will do my best to make her look great and she should listen to me because I’m a professional. It usually worked for me.
Gaby: Does everyone look better with make-up? What is one thing that anyone can do to be their most beautiful selves?
Tal: Makeup is a way to make women look better and to enhance their natural beauty. I got to see a lot of cases when a girl looked better without makeup, so it’s also possible if the makeup is „too much” or not compliment the girl, she’d be better without it, or she should learn to do it right.
I think having self-confidence is a great way to look great even without makeup.
Gaby: What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Tal: To find my right path where I will have my own artistic freedom. It’s not easy, but that’s what I’m after.
Gaby: Do you wear and/or buy handmade things? Why?
Tal: I guess some of my things are handmade, but I admit I didn’t give it a lot of thought.
Gaby: Do you have a message for people who want to start a career in makeup? Any tips or advice?
Tal: It takes a lot of patience sometimes. There’s a lot of makeup artists out there, and a lot of them are really good, so it’s hard to stand out and sometimes it takes time, even years. A lot of aspiring makeup artists are getting frustrated over it and give up, but if it’s your real dream, you should have patience because eventually it will come true and you will be a successful makeup artist.
Thank you Tal for your amazing art and especially for the time you offered me in making this interview. I wish you all the best and a lot of inspiration in your further activity.
