Between May 1 and June 30, 2020, artists from the Ruhr area and artists from the EU were able to submit applications for the international residency programme KREATIVCAMPUS.RUHR.
On July 24, 2020, four projects were selected for funding recommendation in the online jury meeting. Within the KREATIVCAMPUS.RUHR, four co-productions between regional artists and artists from the EU are funded. The recipients receive a three to five month scholarship as well as funding for production and travel costs. A total of 56 applications have been received for funding by KREATIVCAMPUS.RUHR. After the formal examination, the concepts were presented to the five-person international jury (Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva, Paolo Montemurro (jury chair), Silke Schönfeld, Tobias Staab, René van Engelenburg) for evaluation.
Origin of the applicants. In 31 of the 56 applications, the Ruhr area partner resides in Essen or Bochum. The other applicants are spread across the entire Ruhr area. Among the EU partners, the Netherlands are at the top with ten applicants and Austria with six applicants, followed by Belgium, Italy, France and Spain.
Applications according to artistic branches. It turns out that performing arts and music are at the top. This is followed by digital art and film/video art. Digital art summarizes the terms mentioned in the application such as virtual and augmented reality as well as new media. A special feature is the high proportion of interdisciplinary projects. Around 43 percent work on an interdisciplinary basis and indicated several fields in their application.
The first jury session. The first judging process consisted of a pre-evaluation phase and an online jury meeting. A Top 20 list was created from the results of the preliminary evaluations, which was discussed in detail at the online jury meeting.
From the top 20, four applications were selected for a recommendation for funding by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia:
- Aquateque (Einar Fehrholz and Daria Jelonek) An intermedial, audiovisual project about the course of the river Ruhr, the reciprocal relationship between culture and nature as well as the empty space between urbanization and renaturation
- It’s not my responsibility to get famous (Magdalena Öttl and Parini Secondo) A multimedia dance performance about memes and how they spread as replicating ideas in a community.
- Momentum of a Crisis (Patrick Lohse and Suat Öğüt) An interdisciplinary exhibition format in which the history of German guest workers is thematized.
- Why Not? Super Sonic Storytelling (Romy Schmidt and Rojin Sharafi) The development of new forms of multi-perspective storytelling in an interdisciplinary collective.
The second jury meeting will take place in spring 2021 after the results of the four co-productions have been presented. The KREATIVCAMPUS.RUHR Award will then be presented to the winners.
