There are 20 international artists present in the second edition of „The Transparent Breath” to be held in Venice from 31 August to 24 September during The Venice Glass Week. The event is promoted by the Cultural Association Arte Design Venezia.
The second edition of The Transparent Breath welcomes in Venice the glass jewelry of 20 international artists. The exhibition affirms itself as a meeting place between the millennial tradition of Venetian glass and the contemporary innovation of the international panorama.
‘The intent is to inspire beauty in the eyes of the visitor and to encourage dialogue about the understanding and inclusion of the contemporary jewel in glass in a context full of history and culture as those that the city of Venice preserves’. – comments Eleonora Varotto, curator of the exhibition.
The wearable artworks exhibited this year follow the common thread of transparency, the main characteristic of glass. Different textures, finishes and artistic experiments characterize the various jewels on display making them unique and not replicable. Among the exhibited creations it will be possible to observe the sculptural necklaces of Alexandra Mezo (Hungary) where the thickness of the glass meets the delicacy of the color. The self-taught couple, Patricia Naranjo and Andrés Belloví – AGAPURNI (Spain), proposes jewels with an unusual and unexpected shape, blown in order to recall the twisted tubes. With her pieces in dichroic glass that change color with the movement of light, Ana Viñuela (Spain) invites to „read between the lines”. Eugènia Arnavat (Spain) instead uses recycled glass for her pieces that are a tribute to women who have suffered from breast cancer. Her pieces speak of fragility and strength. Sferarte is inspired by nature and futuristic shapes in the creation of original and captivating jewelry. In the necklaces of Iveta Linde (Latvia) we find an important pictorial component where pearls come to life thanks to the skilful use of thin glass. Kateřina Blašková (Czech Republic) uses glass as a sustainable means for the creation of artistic jewelry and refined technique. With her necklaces, LORETTI DESIGN by Deborah de Weerd (Aruba), creates a fresh and imaginative design in a timeless form. Katarzyna Gemborys (Poland) enchants with her virtuosity in which glass is inspired by the rhizosphere and the universal connections around us.
There are 5 Japanese artists; Yuka Okamoto (Japan) with her unique pieces on the border between jewelry and independent sculpture. NORIKO HERRON Glass+Art (Japan) captures the fluid appearance of glass, returning it in creations that seem to merge with the wearer, becoming almost a second skin. Naomi Nakamura (Japan) plays instead with light creating delicate jewelry and the unusual impression of softness. SUIM GLASS (Japan) combines three-dimensionality and lightness in ear cuffs that frame the ear in a unique and graceful way. The circle closes with the colorful and playful rings of SOSACHI (Japan) that immediately refer to a nostalgic childhood dimension.
Among the reconfirmed artists we find Antonija Gospic (Croatia) who this year combines recycled glass with metal, copper, to create virtuosity and shapes that chase each other. Presence reconfirmed also for the two Russian DriftLand (Lada Tazetdinova) and Olga BloomTON Tabakova that present respectively the contradictory power of the wind related to the environmental events of our time and the delicacy of the cherry blossom, a hymn to love all recreated strictly in glass. From Germany Celina Szelejewska-Pigulla returns, her experimentation with acrylic painting and the multi-layer casting technique gives rise to rings with bold and attractive design. David Yeshia (Canada) reconfirms his presence with evocative pendants in which you can see Japanese landscapes embellished with gold specks. Cecilia Lopez Bravo (USA) proposes rock jewelry; glass and piercings in her pieces that seem to come directly from the future.
The selected artist’s jewelry are housed in a prestigious location, a real treasure chest: the ancient Palazzo Nani Mocenigo now home to the Hotel Nani Mocenigo Palace, a few steps from Le Gallerie dell’Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.
The project is curated by Eleonora Varotto from HOOROON in collaboration with Lisa Balasso.
